The 5th edition of the summer holiday camp organised by the Dizénidani association
The annual holiday camp organised by the Dizénidani Association (Tiébélé, Burkina Faso) with the support of the Cuomo Foundation took place this year from August 1 to 30, 2018. During one month, this event offered local schoolchildren a series of extracurricular activities, ranging from compensatory education to environmental awareness, not to mention sports and the arts.
The educational component of the program saw the dispensation of French and Mathematics courses. For the first time, the arts were also included in the programme through a music workshop. These academic activities were carried out in parallel with sport activities : football and handball sessions. In fact, the civic education that the summer camp tries to inculcate in the young participants passes largely by Physical Training and sporing values.
The closing day of the camp was placed under the theme of reforestation. This special day dedicated to the protection of the environment was hosted by a local nurseryman. A special film screening, presented by the local professional, was organised as the highlight of the day. The students were then invited to plant trees not only in the school compound of the camp, but also in their own backyards. After the one-month long holiday activities, each child returned home with a plant of their own. As part of these animations, the children observed the growth of the trees planted by their counterparts of the previous seasons.
This year, there was a record number of registrations for the summer camp: 130 registrants in total including 62 girls—an unexpected success that forced the organisers to increase the logistics of the event.
